Cyberwar Explained
An excellent article in the NY Times about the attacks on Estonian networks. Commendable primarily because it is one of the first such treatments I've seen in a non-specialist outlet that doesn't present a horrifying level of techical illiteracy.

Man I wish I head a cyber warhead that I could aim at Nashi headquarters.
I'd also like to block access to Sergei Lavrov's bank account ...
How awesome is it that the Nashi cyberheadquarters are at www.nashi.SU?
It's lame. Despite its colorful communist kitschy culture, and place in films about espionage, the Soviet Union mostly sucked. Ask my friend who was born in "Leningrad" in the cold winter of 1971. He probably would like to slap around Nashi more than I would.
Sure it's lame, but it's also the part of the myth of SU, the part of general soviet background. One thing that those kids have not seen the Soviet Union, it's a dreamland for them. That's what they have in common with many participants of bronze night. It's the country of global joy and happiness their parents used to live in.
BTW, it's one of really few domains left in SU zone, probably the last registered there. I remember couple of years ago there were some discussions going on about to close this domain zone while the country does not exist, and there are almost no working domains left there.
Few days ago I was collecting old headlines from the Baltic Independent 1992-1993.It is the same old propaganda machine one could read. The name is not Lavrov, his name was Kosyrev then.
Things like that:
'If acts of terrorism against Russia citizens continue... temporary economic sanctions...'
July 24-30 1992
Well Jens, you know the old saying: history repeats itself three times. Once as a tragedy, the second time as a farce, and the third time just in case, for the idiots who didn't get the point the first two times. ;)
A pretty poor excuse for an article, but hey, if estonian government said the attack was ordered by the Putin, then it's definitely true. They never lie :)
