Point is, if you build it, you could also build a suitable background (at great cost).

Now is "Buri" derived from "puri", the Estonian word for "sail"?Kristopherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01394211030848077681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16421782.post-58743044355629601692008-06-23T10:38:00.000+03:002008-06-23T10:38:00.000+03:00I think it would be impossible to create a buildin...I think it would be impossible to create a building that would look beautiful in every possible environment. The Buri Al Arab would look silly in downtown Rakvere and the Fahle would look silly in Crete. A building needs to fit the place where it is built. It doesn't need to look good everywhere since it doesn't move. Most high rises don't necessarily fit their environment, though as you Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02108695780291232809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16421782.post-7435624570031951872008-06-23T09:07:00.000+03:002008-06-23T09:07:00.000+03:00That's the thing: the Burj al Arab fits its contex...That's the thing: the Burj al Arab fits its context. The beauty is afforded by the scenery of the coastline, not by the building itself. Put the Burj al Arab in downtown Rotterdam and it will look preposterous.antyxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06567309109757565293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16421782.post-36273427765031555232008-06-23T03:30:00.000+03:002008-06-23T03:30:00.000+03:00Another view of the snail tower: from a flightAnother view of the snail tower: from a flightJens-Olafhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18304784095687896639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16421782.post-78977780118444218712008-06-21T11:16:00.000+03:002008-06-21T11:16:00.000+03:00I think the Buri Al Arab in Dubai is a good exampl...I think the Buri Al Arab in Dubai is a good example of a modern high rise that is not only beautiful, but completely fits it's environment. It stands just offshore and mimics the full spinnaker of a sailing ship.

Buri Al ArabAlexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02108695780291232809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16421782.post-38589692513450182842008-06-20T20:56:00.000+03:002008-06-20T20:56:00.000+03:00I did see them. Biggest culture shock was the fact that you cannot get a half-decent piece of pork in California for love or money. Still bemoaning the distinct absence of a Fry's Electronics type institution closer to home.antyxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06567309109757565293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16421782.post-2065389811090999522008-06-20T19:43:00.000+03:002008-06-20T19:43:00.000+03:00"Long Hermann"? At 14 stories, it's only half as high as the Radisson but I think it qualifies as high-rise. Its foundation is also 5-6 storeys higher than that of the buildings in the business district.

I used to think it was silly, now I like it.
